Five killed in taxi crash

2010-12-04 10:19

Five people were burned to death and two babies were critically injured when their taxi rolled and caught fire on the N2 outside Grahamstown early this morning, the Eastern Cape health department said.

Five adults were burned beyond recognition and 12 other passengers, including the two babies estimated to be one month old, were rushed to Settlers Hospital in Grahamstown, said spokesperson Sizwe Kupelo.

He said the babies were critically injured and have since been moved to Livingstone Hospital in Port Elizabeth.

“The babies have not been claimed. They are unknown, so we believe their parents must have been among the five killed,” Kupelo said.

Of the other ten passengers, nine were treated for minor injuries and one was admitted to hospital and treated for more serious injuries.

The taxi was travelling from Hermanus in the Western Cape to King William’s Town in the Eastern Cape.

The cause of the accident is not known.
