Former Scorpions boss heads up commercial crime unit

2011-11-28 15:45

President Jacob Zuma has appointed former KwaZulu-Natal Scorpions boss Lawrence Mrwebi as head of the Specialised Commercial Crime Unit.

Mrwebi’s appointment was gazetted on Friday and he will report to national Public Prosecutions director Menzi Simelane.

Mrwebi replaces Advocate Chris Jordaan, who headed the unit until his redeployment last year, and will be a special director of public prosecutions.

Jordaan helped the unit achieve a success rate of about 94%.

Mrwebi’s duties will include directing the investigations and prosecutions of serious organised and complex financial crimes.

Last year, Mrwebi testified in the corruption trial of disgraced former national police chief Jackie Selebi, who he said was a target of the now defunct elite crime unit because he wanted the Scorpions integrated into the police force.

NPA spokesperson Mthunzi Mhaga said Jordaan was medically boarded in March this year. Mrwebi commenced his duties early this month.
