A former IFP councillor convicted of murder was handed a life sentence in the Phongola Magistrates’ Court, says the KwaZulu-Natal community safety department.

Sakhi Ngcamu who was a councillor in Ward39 in eThewini was sentenced on Thursday, said safety MEC Willies Mchunu.

The court heard that Ngcamu was paid to kill a woman in 2011. He was handed a life sentence for her murder.

“Ngcamu was also given additional 13 years which will run concurrently for destroying evidence in [the] murder case of a male who was killed at the KwaMashu hostel,” said Mchunu.

Ngcamu was found in possession of the firearm which was used in the hostel murder.

The shooter - Phiwingcebo Biyela - was sentenced to 15 years behind bars for the murder.
