Four dead in Libya bombing

2011-04-25 14:35

Four people were killed as forces loyal to Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi blasted the town of Zintan in western Libya with Grad rockets, residents said today.

They said four people died and nine were wounded – two of them seriously – late on Sunday as government troops opened fire and between six and nine Grads crashed into homes.

A four-year-old girl with a bullet wound in the head as well as a man shot in the leg and stomach were moved to hospitals across the nearby border with Tunisia, a Tunisian medical source said.

The mountainous area of Zintan, southwest of Tripoli, was one of the first to rise up against Gaddafi’s regime in March. Rebels last week captured a border post in the area.

Also yesterday, fighting broke out in Al-Harabah, 25 kilometres east of Nalut, in a battle for control of the Nalut-Zintan road, which was closed, local residents said.

They said Nato air strikes were carried out near Al-Ruhaybat, also east of Nalut, in an apparent bid to assist the rebels.

Two people were killed in Nato raids late on Friday on the Zintan region where fighting has escalated against rebels who hold several towns, according to the state’s Jana news agency.
