Four waiters arrested for credit card fraud

2011-02-03 15:06

Four waiters were arrested in Cape Town yesterday for credit card fraud, according to Western Cape police.

Lieutenant-Colonel Andrè Traut said the four, including two Zimbabweans and a Malawian, were found with two skimming devices and cloned bank cards.

Cellphones found in their possession contained the numbers of compromised credit cards, he said.

Police searched their houses and confiscated two laptops containing credit card details and software used to download skimmed information and re-encode it on to other cards.

About R5 500 was also seized.

“Following reports of cards being compromised at a city restaurant in Burg Street by the forensic investigators of major financial institutions, the establishment was kept under surveillance by [the SA Police Service].

“The suspect waiters were identified and arrested during the early hours of Wednesday morning,” Traut said.

The men were charged with fraud and contravening the Electronic Communications and Transaction Act.

They were expected to appear in the Cape Town Magistrate’s Court tomorrow.
