Free State ANC conference off to a slow start

2012-06-22 13:04

The Free State ANC provincial conference got off to a very slow start at the Arwa conference centre in Parys today.

Delegates only started to enter the centre shortly after noon although the conference was scheduled to start at 10am.

Ace Magashule, provincial chairperson, arrived after 1pm.

The conference was postponed several times, sparking rumours that the Free State would not be able to hold its provincial conference before next week’s ANC policy conference.

The Free State conference was initially scheduled to take place in May. It was then postponed to June 8 and later to June 16.

The postponements came amid fierce in-fighting between two factions – one supporting Magashule and the other supporting provincial treasurer and former MEC Mxolisi Dukwana.

The political in-fighting has led to several shooting incidents and physical fights that were reported at branch meetings.

Despite several branches that support Dukwana indicating that they would not attend the conference, the conference centre was filling up today, albeit slowly.

Dukwana and provincial secretary Sibongile Besani were not spotted during the official opening of the conference. Besani has been nominated by Dukwana supporters to be re-elected as provincial secretary.
