2011-03-09 14:19

A sheep thief had to be rescued from a pit toilet after he fell into the pit while fleeing an angry mob in a village in Qwaqwa, Free State police said today.

Sergeant Mmako Mophiring said two people stole 15 sheep from a man at the Monontsa Village in Qwaqwa at 6pm on Sunday.

“His shepherd said that two people allegedly entered his kraal and stole 15 sheep. One of them fired three shots to scare him and he ran away,” he said.

The sheep were recovered in the Monontsa Mountain area on Monday by members of the community who chased the thieves in the direction of Namahadi Village.

The armed thief entered a yard in the Mangaung Village area and shot the house owner twice in the leg.

However, while trying to hide in the yard, the thief fell into the pit toilet.

The police were called as was a rescue team from the Maluti-A-Phofung municipality fire department and sewerage draining personnel.

Mophiring said the 21-year-old man was rescued and arrested.

Police found the pistol in the toilet.
