Free State woman shot for stokvel money

2011-12-12 10:56

A Free State woman was shot and wounded by two men who robbed her of stokvel money, police said today.

“The woman was attacked on Friday afternoon by two unknown men who shot at her and took her bag containing R26 000 in cash,” Warrant Officer Malebo Khosana said.

The money was supposed to be shared among the members of her society as they normally did in December after saving for the year, Khosana said.

The attack happened at her house in Doornpan, Thabong, as she arrived home from the bank after withdrawing the money.

“She sustained a gun shot injury on the right arm and two on the right side of her torso (upper body) ... It is not clear at this stage how many shots were fired at the victim.

“We have registered a case of armed robbery for further investigation and are on the track of the two men,” Khosana said.

The woman (41) is in a stable condition in hospital.

In September, three people were arrested in connection with the theft of stokvel money near Mthatha in the Eastern Cape.

Two women – aged 37 and 41 – were members of a stokvel group who were robbed of R130 000 by two men.

The robbery occurred when the members were about to share the money among themselves.

Police recovered R15 000 of the stolen money when they arrested a 40-year-old man in the same village.

They also confiscated an illegal firearm.
