Freedom is . . .

2012-04-27 08:06

With Slikour causing ripples with his song Blacks R Fools, hip-hop is firmly back in the spotlight. Often in conversation with controversial topics and social issues, this genre frequently carries a political component.

On Friday, revellers gathered at the Mary Fitzgerald Square to celebrate Freedom Day through rhyme and reason at the sixth Back to the City Youth Festival.

While revellers danced and sang along, it was really about the message being sent out by the artists on stage.

So what does freedom mean to hip-hop cats?

Zakwe
» Freedom is the state of being free from any constraints, be they physical, social, political or economic. But, more importantly as an artist freedom should allow me to express myself without any fear of repercussion or persecution.

» My music gives me the freedom to speak about and reflect on the type of society we would want to be a part of, but also to celebrate our everyday life as South Africans.

» I would like future generations to feel free to know that freedom comes with responsibility and that today we must build a South Africa that we will be proud to leave behind
for future generations to inherit.

» Freedom Day should be important to all South Africans because it gives us the opportunity to reflect on where we come from as a nation and to hope and wish for the kind of South Africa we always wanted it to be.

» The best way to spend Freedom Day is to artistically express the day through my craft, which is music, at events that commemorate and celebrate the day.

L-Tido
» Freedom is allowing yourself to follow your dreams and live your talent the best way you can. It’s about letting go of everything and unlocking your mental doors.

» My music gives me the freedom to express myself and everything I feel and go through – happy or sad.

» I would like future generations to feel free to be fearless and never be too afraid to dream.

» Freedom Day should be important to all South Africans because we live in a liberated, diverse country and we are united today; that makes the day very special. I’m living a life I wouldn’t have been able to 20 years ago. I go out at any time with no worries. We are free in our own country.

» The best way to spend Freedom Day is to go out and perform; just do what I love best.

3rd Wave
» Freedom is being unhindered to express yourself in any way.

» My music gives me the freedom to dance and make others dance.

» I would like future generations to feel free to express themselves and freely voice their concerns, their lives and their experiences.

» Freedom Day should be important to all South Africans because it reminds us of a time before now. We would not have had this holiday if it wasn’t for the past; so it’s not just about not going to school or work that day, but we must all try to find out what the day means for each of us personally.

» The best way to spend Freedom Day is performing at Back to the City. It is how I’ve spent it for the past few years and it has been the best for me.

AKA
» Freedom is different to what it meant to the generation that came before us. Now our struggle is about an economic freedom, a spiritual freedom, a freedom of thinking and so on – the freedom to take advantage of the opportunities we now have.

» My music gives me the freedom to say whatever I like and to express myself without boundaries.

» I would like future generations to feel free to challenge conventional wisdom, to think outside the box, to be whomever they dream they can be.

» Freedom Day should be important to all South Africans because it’s a chance to look at the situation we were in, and how far we’ve come and how far we still have to go too.

» The best way to spend Freedom Day is with your loved ones, or with ones who love what you do.

Morale
» Freedom is having the space to voice how you feel and be who you are.

» My music gives me the freedom to express my thoughts and document the times I live in.

» I would like future generations to feel free to express themselves and represent their people through culture and music.

» Freedom Day should be important to all South Africans because it is a part of our history and you can’t go forward if you don’t know where you are from.

» The best way to spend Freedom Day is to attend a public event – just be with fellow South Africans.

Reason
» Freedom is being able to be yourself without worrying about what others think of it.

» My music gives me the freedom to make any kind of music my talent enables me to.

» I would like future generations to feel free to be whatever they can be.

» Freedom Day should be important to all South Africans because it reminds us of our birthright.

» The best way to spend Freedom Day is by going out to (public festivals) to witness a small yet significant portion of what freedom has produced.
