Friction-free start to by-election on Malema’s homeground

2012-09-19 08:27

Voting in Julius Malema’s neighbourhood got off to a friction-free start at the Mponegele Primary School in Seshego, Zone 1.

The residents of Zone 1, which forms part of ward 13 of the Polokwane municipality are voting in a by-election to replace councillor Alinah Molemati who passed away in April.

The by-election is being contested by the ANC’s Samuel Motseo, the DA’s David Kwenaite and George Tembo, who is an independent candidate.

Last week Tembo, a former member of the ANC, told City Press he decided to stand as an independent candidate after Malema’s friend, Jossie Buthane, had kicked him out of the Mailo Malajtie branch.

Buthane, who is the chairperson of the branch, denied the allegation.

Malema is expected to cast his vote at noon.

The Independent Electoral Commission said, thus far, voting has been incident free.

The presiding officer, who only wanted to be identified as Dikeledi, said “so far we haven’t seen anything wrong. Everything is progressing according to plan. We arrived at 6am and opened up the station at 7am. We will close the station at 9pm.”

There is a strong police presence outside the station with nyalas and water cannon trucks.
