Full-hand above the knee

2012-01-07 18:38

Never wear a mini-skirt in Joburg city. This is a rule that myself and my female relatives grew up following. Not out of fear of being assaulted but because it’s a drag to have to listen to endless cat-calls from unwanted quarters.

So we never wore anything a full-hand above the knee. But funnily enough, just this week, I went to “Noord mall” to check out one of my downtime fashion bargain stores. I was wearing a vest and flared skirt that stopped a full-hand above my knee and in front of me walked a woman wearing a red playsuit with a short hemline.

Curiously, neither of us garnered any attention.

However, I know in my gut that had my skirt been the same length but body-hugging, or if the other woman’s shorts were a skirt instead, we wouldn’t have come out unscathed.

So, my rule about walking past any taxi rank in the country is to cover up. As much as I believe in wearing whatever I want to anywhere, there are some places you just cover up.

Like taxi ranks and churches.
