Fund finally pays widow her benefit

2010-09-18 09:05

Neo Setlhogo’s four-year struggle to get a death benefit paid out by the Government Employees Pension Fund has ended.

On Monday R132?000 landed in her bank account.

This was the payout of a death benefit claim she had made in 2006 after her husband died.

In addition Setlhogo is going to be paid a monthly spousal pension.

The fund’s spokesperson, Ofentse Seleka, said Setlhogo’s payment was made up of a lump-sum benefit, as well as a monthly pension.

“The monthly pension is backdated to August 1 2006 and interest of 9.5% was added to it,” said Seleka.

In July Setlhogo approached Hotline for help after her efforts to get the fund to finalise the process of the death benefit claim she had lodged shortly after the death of her husband had failed.

Setlhogo claimed she had submitted all the necessary documents to her husband’s employer and the fund, but the claim was still unpaid four years later.

Setlhogo’s late husband, Frans Setlhogo, was a member of the fund from 1984 to July 2006, when he passed away.

Seleka said the reason it took so long to finalise the claim was because Setlhogo had initially submitted incorrect information and had not provided the necessary supporting documents.

He said in July last year the fund sent a letter requesting her to submit additional information but she failed to do so.

Seleka said: “Another delay was that the late Setlhogo had not submitted a nomination form to indicate how the death benefit was to be divided among his wife, her child and three other surviving children born from another mother.”

Setlhogo is happy the matter has now been resolved.
