Gang rape case: eighth accused appears

2012-04-20 11:07

A man implicated in the rape of a Soweto teenager appeared in the Roodepoort Magistrates Court despite earlier confusion about whether he would appear.

“This is because the preliminary investigation has been finalised and as we speak he is now in court,” said the Gauteng police’s Lieutenant Colonel Tshisikhawe Ndou today.

“We decided this because it is still early in the day and there is no reason to keep him until Monday.”

Earlier, media were informed by police that the man, who was due to appear today, would instead appear on Monday.

No reason was given for this and reporters who had converged at the courthouse left.

The man is accused of holding a 17-year-old girl against her will at his shack in Braamfischerville in Soweto.

The girl was found on Wednesday and had gone missing from her Dobsonville home on March 21.

Seven others, including two minors, who matched the descriptions of the rapists seen in a cellphone video of the gang rape, appeared in court yesterday.

Their case was postponed until April 25 for further investigation.
