Gang-rape charges withdrawn against teens

2014-05-29 08:41

Charges against five boys accused of gang raping a mentally impaired girl have been withdrawn in the Protea Magistrates’ Court.

The Star reported yesterday that the teenagers, aged between 17 and 18, had initially been charged with rape, sexual assault and using a minor to create child pornography. Two others who were arrested with them were previously acquitted.

The court found there was no evidence of rape and all charges against the boys were dropped yesterday.

They were arrested in April 2012 after a cellphone video of some of them having sex with a 17-year-old girl went viral on the internet.

William Karam, for the boys, said the girl had solicited his clients.

“They were playing soccer on a Sunday afternoon when she approached the accused for sex at a price, at R2 a shot. Basically, she solicited them,” Karam was quoted as saying.

He said the boys did not know she was mentally impaired.
