Gardener’s son first top black pupil in Mpumalanga

2012-01-09 15:02

Meet Mpumalanga’s first black top pupil in Grade 12. Thabiso Moabi (18) from Libangeni – a deep rural area near Marble Hall – studied at a no-fee school.

Moabi got seven distinctions and was Mpumalanga’s overall best learner in the class of 2011 and was among the top 10 matric pupils in South Africa.

Moabi scored 100% in accounting.

Hlalakahle Secondary School, where Moabi did his matric, is also the first quintile 3 or no-fee school to produce such a pupil.

“I studied hard from the beginning of the year and was consistent throughout. I’m just over the moon to be the first black (student) to be the overall best learner in Mpumalanga,” he said.

“I was also driven by my family’s poor background as I want to change it,” Moabi said.

His father, Jeffrey (40), is a gardener in Midrand, Johannesburg, while his mother, Helen (36), is unemployed.

Moabi wants to study a BCom in accounting at the University of Pretoria and, fortunately, he has a number of bursaries to choose from.

Mpumalanga education spokesperson Jasper Zwane said: “This is the first time the province has an overall best learner who is black and from a quintile 3 school. The results show that there’s something good done by public schools.”
