Gauteng elections ‘off to a good start’

2011-05-18 10:49

The 2011 local government elections are well under way in Gauteng with a few isolated problems reported, said Independent Electoral Commission provincial commissioner Sy Mamabolo at a media briefing today.

On the West Rand some voting stations opened late because of faulty scanners known as zip-zips. Although “zip-zips” were used to scan voters’ IDs, they were not essential to the voting process, the IEC said.

“The voters’ roll is the authoritative document when it comes to establishing the correct registration of voters,” said Mamabolo. This can be done manually.

The Independent Electoral Commission announced that there were no disruptions reported at areas identified as hotspots prior to election day.

Security agencies would closely monitor Zandspruit, Drieziek, Diepsloot, Barcelona and Sekampaneng throughout the day.

In areas where technical difficulties resulted in delays, the affected polling stations would consider extending hours to afford all South Africans the opportunity to vote.

More voters are expected to make their way to the 20 868 voting stations throughout the country with voter turnout expected to peak at around 4pm this afternoon.
