Gauteng wants Boxing Act repealed

2013-09-07 11:57

Gauteng is likely to push for the SA Boxing Act of 2001 to be thrown out at the National Boxing Indaba (NBI) on September 27.

This emerged during the first day of the two-day Gauteng Boxing Indaba in Boksburg yesterday.

This and the proposed Combat Sports Bill were among the burning issues discussed in the four commissions of the indaba.

Delegates agreed the act was outdated and it was to blame for all the trouble facing the beleaguered sport.

Boxing SA (BSA) chairperson Ntambi Ravele said she was impressed by the robust debates from various stake-holders attending the gathering.

“It was good to see people expressing themselves freely and showing their passion for the sport,” she said.

“The most important thing though is to come up with sound resolutions that will see boxing’s image change for the positive.”

Other issues discussed at the indaba were:

» BSA operating as a federation with its own constitution and elections like other sporting codes,

» Boxing rules and regulations and;

» Role of promoters and standards set by BSA.

The Indaba will end today with the adoption of recommendations to be tabled at the NBI.
