Gautrain employees set to down tools

Gautrain users might have to make alternative transport plans on Monday after United Transport and Allied Trade Union (Utatu) put in a strike notice.

“Utatu (the union which represents Gautrain train drivers and some station staff) has issued a strike notice effective Monday morning,” said Errol Braithwaite, the operations, marketing and communications executive for Bombela Concession Company.

Utatu is disputing management’s proposed percentage annual wage increase.

“I don’t know the exact percentage that is being disputed but I can reveal that the numbers are too far apart,” said Braithwaite.

He said the union and management would meet tomorrow morning and have talks in hopes of possibly resolving the matter. If the talks are unsuccessful, then there will be a strike on Monday.

Braithwaite emphasised that commuters need not worry and would be informed about any schedule changes ahead of time.

He said people who had paid for multiple trips in advance, would be reimbursed or receive some sort of compensation for the inconvenience.

However, commuters using the Gautrain bus services shouldn’t worry as they won’t be affected by the strike.
