Gautrain routes get the green light from safety regulator

2011-07-12 13:15

The Gautrain has been given the green light by the Railway Safety Regulator to operate between Park Station and Hatfield, and Sandton to OR Tambo International Airport, the regulator announced today.

The regulator said it was satisfied with Gautrain operations after successfully completing rigorous safety testing and trial runs.

The regulator issued the Gautrain’s Bombela Operating Company with a safety permit.

The Sandton to OR Tambo International Airport route became operational in June last year.

“All the required safety measures are in place to enable the transportation of passengers,” the regulator said.

The regulator has been working with Bombela since 2007 to ensure the safe completion and operation of the Gautrain.

It was involved in the design, construction, testing and commissioning by conducting safety reviews, assessments and inspections on all safety aspects.

Gautrain spokesperson Barbara Jensen said an announcement would be made early next week on the start of the Park Station and Hatfield route.

“It’s obviously good news that the regulator has given us the go-ahead, but that is just one of the bridges we have to cross,” she said.

The next step is certification by an independent certifier.
