Gay and lesbian festival underway

2009-09-10 11:06

Spring is a season of perpetual astonishments and September is the month of festivals.

Out of Africa Festival, a gay and lesbian festival, has kicked off in Johannesburg at Montecasino and runs until September 13. Out of Africa heads to the V&A Waterfront in Cape Town from September 10-20.

The festival will showcase 29 films and aims to put young and ambitious filmmakers on the map. The purpose of the festival is to showcase films from across the world and to stimulate a home-grown film industry.

The festival generates images and representations of its own community that promotes a sense of belonging and pride. It counteracts embedded homophobia by providing positive images of homosexuals.

Director of the festival, Nodi Murphy, says: “Johannesburg has been great so far, with a lot of people supporting the festival. It creates social bonds and there shouldn’t be a stigma at all attached to homosexuality.”

She hopes that next year the festival will expand and reach out to a larger audience.

Meanwhile, another festival that is creating a buzz this spring is the seventh annual Tri-Continental Film Festival. The festival aims to showcase South African feature films and some from countries such as Japan and Germany.

The festival aims to foster understanding and build a more tolerant world through spreading knowledge of human rights.

The films will be showcased at the following venues:

  • Maponya Mall, Soweto, September 11-13
  • Rosebank Mall, Joburg, September 14-20
  • Bedford Square, Joburg, September 17-20
  • V&A Waterfront, Cape Town, September 18-27
  • Brooklyn Mall, Pretoria,October 1-5
  • Musgrave Mall, Durban, October 8-12
