Gay group hails Durban

2011-07-26 10:54

Durban has declared itself the “gayest” city in the country.

This is according to the youth leader of the Durban Lesbian and Gay Community Health Centre, Siphokazi Nombande.

Compared with other big cities such as Johannesburg and Cape Town, Durban was the most accommodating towards gay people, The Times reported.

“We have a very small number of hate crimes against gays and lesbians reported in Durban and KwaZulu-Natal in general,” he said.

“I would say there are 10 cases that have been reported. But these are the cases that we have records of. There could be many more.”

A handful of gays and lesbians converged on the Durban City Hall yesterday to start a week-long Durban Pride Week, aimed at celebrating the “I AM” campaign.

The campaign began when members of the Durban Lesbians and Gays hoisted a Rainbow Flag as a reminder to rise above discrimination, hate crimes, gay-bashing, corrective rape and other injustices faced by lesbians, gay, bisexual and transgender people.

One of only two serving gay DA councillors in the eThekwini municipality, Martin Meyer, said he was proud to be part of the event.

The ANC Youth League’s Mdu Khuzwayo said it had been the league’s struggle to champion the rights of young people.
