George Benson in the house

2010-04-02 13:59

George Benson was honoured on Friday by Universal Music and Gallo

Records.

The jazz artist was given a Multi platinum award for Warner Music

Africa sales in South Africa from Universal Music and a Gold award for the

‘Givin’ It Up’ album he recorded with Al Jarreau.

“As a record company, it is tradition to celebrate excellence by

presenting the artist with such an award,” said Gallo General Manager, Neil

Greenberg.

Gold awards are presented to artists whose album sales exceed

20?000 units, platinum awards are given to artists who sell more than 40?000

units and artists whose album sales exceed 80?000 units are presented with a

double platinum award.

Benson’s album sales in Africa exceeded half a million.

“I told my manager to call Al Jareau, and let him know that

something very special is going to go down in South Africa and congratulate him,

so can I take that back to him? That’s the real Al Jarreau that you’re listening

to there (referring to the album). He’s not different, he’s upfront and

powerful. So I really thank you for this award” said Benson.

George Benson is performing a tribute to Nat King Cole with a 28

piece orchestra on Saturday at the 11th annual Cape Town International Jazz

Festival.
