Germany prepares sanctions against Libyan leaders

2011-02-25 08:48

Berlin – Germany is preparing sanctions against Libyan leaders over the deadly attacks on demonstrators there, Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle said today, hours before the UN Security Council was to discuss similar plans.

“It’s no longer about setting deadlines, it’s about acting now,” Westerwelle told Deutschlandfunk radio. “Therefore I have decided that sanctions should be prepared now.”

Westerwelle called for travel bans on the family of Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi and for their funds overseas to be frozen, but dismissed economic sanctions.

He said Germany would start talks immediately with its international partners, including those in the European Union.

The push comes as the United States tries to drum up international backing for ways to stem the bloodshed in Libya where forces loyal to Gaddafi have been fighting rebels holding cities near the capital, Tripoli.

The UN Security Council plans to meet later today to receive a French-British draft proposal for sanctions against Libyan leaders, though no vote is expected on a resolution until next week.
