Ghana kicked off their African Nations Championship campaign on a positive note, beating plucky Republic of Congo 1-0 in their opening Group C encounter at the Free State Stadium.

The solitary Black Stars strike came from midfielder Theophilus Anobaah in the 34th minute with a shot from the edge of the box which deflected off the feet of Congolese defender Kevin Andzouana.

With three points in the bag, the west Africans can now switch focus to their second group match against Libya at the same venue on Friday.

However, the win over the Congolese will not entirely convince coach Maxwell Konadu whose side were lacklustre in the Bloemfontein afternoon heat.

Wasted chances at goal from Mohammed Sulley and Nuru Sulley should have seen Ghana double their score margin. Yahaya Mohammed also had a first half free-kick outstandingly stopped by Gildas Mouyaki in the Congo goal.

The brave Red Devils can walk away with their heads held high in their first Chan participation having given Ghana some worrisome moments, especially in the first half where Congo were guilty of being wasteful.

They manufactured a chance in the third minute with striker Bersyl Obassi narrowly blasting wide of goal from the edge of the box after a sharp counter-attack.

They twice also missed from close range through Lorry Nkolo and Boris Moubhio. The latter only needed to guide the ball towards goal when the ball landed at his feet after a near-own goal from Joshua Tijani saw the ball ricochet off the post.

The Red Devils surged forward in the second half attempting to find an equaliser but the only meaningful shot from Hardy Binguila on the hour mark failed to cause any threat to Stephen Adams in the Ghanaian goal as his side kept things tight to walk away with the spoils.

Congo will next face Ethiopia, also on Friday, still in search of their first Chan points.

Meanwhile, Ethiopia will take on Libya in their group opening match at Free State Stadium later this evening.
