Ghana triumph over Nigeria on penalties

2014-01-29 23:47

Ghana stunned Nigeria 4-1 on penalties in their energy sapping African Nations Championship (Chan) semifinal at the Free State Stadium after scores remained goalless after extra time.

The Black Stars converted all of their spot kicks through Michael Akuffo, Theophilus Anobaah, Samuel Ainooson and Abraham Attobrah, while the Super Eagles missed twice as keeper Stephen Adams saved Solomon Kwambe’s effort and Ugonna Uzochukwu blasted his shot wide.

The Ghanaians will meet Libya in the final at the Cape Town Stadium on Saturday for a chance to claim their first continental success, having last lifted the Africa Cup of Nations 32 years ago.

However, they were fortunate as Uzochukwu missed right in front of goal with virtually the final kick of the match.

Ghana were also reduced to 10 men after the hour mark when defender Kwabena Adusei was sent off.

The encounter was far from pretty on a slippery field, considering what was at stake in the West African derby. Nigeria started off positively with Abubakar Ibrahim rattling the crossbar with a superb shot from distance moments later.

Ifeanyi Ede also managed to slip through the seemingly water-tight Ghanaian defence in the second half with his final shot going wide of goal before Barnabas Imenger missed an open goal in extra-time with just keeper Adams to beat.

Nuru Sulley nearly snatched an opener for Ghana with seven minutes left of normal time but badly miscued Michael Akuffo’s free-kick – their only meaningful chance in the entire match.

Nigeria will now face Zimbabwe in the third and fourth place play-off match on Saturday, also in Cape Town.
