Ghost of ’66 returns to haunt England

Germany 4

England 1

As Uefa’s top guns continued to fall at 2010, the ghosts of the

1966 World Cup resurfaced in yet another knockout contest between England and

Germany.

With this last 16 encounter a make or bust for the two European

nations, Frank Lampard was denied a legitimate equaliser, in what could have

been a dramatic comeback by the Three Lions, who had trailed by two goals for

over 30 minutes.

With England’s Wayne Rooney out of sorts in his side’s attack,

Miroslav Klose and Lukas Podolski shone on the other end of the pitch to give

the Germans an early lead.

It wasn’t until Matt Upson pulled one back for Fabio Capello’s side

that the ’66 champions started kicking in – then the controversial decision by

the referee to deny Chelsea maestro Lampard.

As it was the case in the final of the 1966 World Cup at Wembley –

on whether Geoff Hurst’s goal had crossed the goal line – there was a renewed

debate between the Englishmen and Germans on whether Lampard’s wonder strike was

a goal or not in Bloemfontein this afternoon. It was a goal, the TV replay

confirmed.

While the English would proclaim “we were robbed”, the final

scoreline told of another elimination of England by Germany in an important

tournament.

Thomas Müller’s brace midway into the second half not only ended

the tie as a contest but the Bayern Munich midfielder helped Joachim Loew’s side

to a place in the quarterfinal against the winner between Argentina and

Mexico.

The 4-1 scoreline was the closest Germany could avenge the 5-1

defeat in the qualification campaign for the 2002 World Cup.
