Gold Fields rockfall injures seven workers

2010-06-07 11:12

Seven mineworkers were injured in a rockfall caused by two tremors

at Gold Fields’ Driefontein gold mine near Carletonville.

Three people were taken to hospital after a rockfall at the number

one shaft at about 5am, said Gold Fields spokesperson Sven Lunsche.

Two hours later at another level of the shaft, four others were

injured when another seism erupted.

Five of the injured workers were released from hospital and two

were treated for minor injuries.

“The mine has shut down five levels in the shaft and workers have

been evacuated.”

The National Union of Mineworkers said the tremors measured 2.7 and

2.9 on the Richter scale.

It called for mines to find a way of monitoring earthquakes to

prevent any loss of life.

The mine said there was only a 20% chance of detecting tremors.
