Gold Fields strikers to return to work

2012-09-05 14:00

Striking miners at Gold Fields’ KDC gold mine on the West Rand have agreed to return to work, said the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM).

“All the disagreements have been resolved for now,” said spokesperson Lesiba Seshoka.

“We can attribute that to the leadership of the NUM. We are very pleased that miners can get back to work.”

Seshoka said the NUM leadership had spoken to the workers and had made a commitment to investigate and attend to their demands.

About 12?000 employees at the mine in Westonaria have been on strike since last Wednesday.

Mine spokesperson Sven Lunsche said: “We are very happy and we are very grateful with the intervention of the NUM national office and we expect miners to return underground for the night shift tonight.”

He said the mine was delighted the strike was over and they appreciated the fact that the strike never resorted to violence.

NUM president Senzeni Zokwana oversaw talks earlier today between the union and striking branch members following a series of meetings yesterday between management, the NUM and its members.
