Outgoing Bafana Bafana head coach Gordon Igesund has accepted Safa’s decision not to renew his contract, saying it was a privilege to coach the national team.

Safa president Danny Jordaan announced yesterday at a press conference that Igesund’s contract, which will expire in August, would not be renewed.

Contacted for comment, Igesund said: “My contract ends in August and Safa have decided not to renew it, it’s as simple as that. I have obviously accepted the decision.

“It’s been a privilege and an honour to coach Bafana and I have enjoyed every minute of it. Life goes on,” the Bafana mentor told the SoccerLaduma website.

Igesund has a very good record for Bafana in the official Afcon games and World Cup qualifiers.

In eight official Afcon games and World Cup qualifiers, Igesund holds the record of four wins, three draws and only one loss.

One of the three draws was the penalty defeat to Mali in last year’s Afcon quarterfinals, which is recorded as a draw by Fifa.

With his future decided at national team level, it remains to be seen where Igesund’s future will lie next.

For some time now, the Bafana mentor has been linked with a move to his former club, Moroka Swallows or SuperSport United.
