Three hundred rehearsals, 1 000 costumes and 60 examples of traditional wear will culminate in the opening ceremony of the Africa Cup of Nations on Saturday.

Themed Celebrate Africa – The Beat at Africa’s feet!, the ceremony will feature African artists only.

“We are going to be biased with South African artists though,” said LOC CEO Mvuso Mbebe.

Out of the nine contracted artists, seven are from South Africa. These are Ringo Madlingozi, Ayanda Nhlangothi, Lira, Afurakan, Sipho “Hotstix” Mabuse, Siphokazi and Judith Sephuma.

Grammy Award winner Oumou Sangaré (Mali) and Eric Wainaina (Kenya) round off the list.

Sibongile Khumalo is the musical director.

Mbebe said: “See the four corners of Africa come alive, see South Africa come alive, through the beat of drums as its centrepiece.”
