Graveyard rapist to appear in court

2013-04-08 09:31

A man suspected of raping a Phokeng woman in a cemetery was expected to appear in court today.

The rape of a woman has been described as despicable by North West premier Thandi Modise.

“The rape of a woman at a cemetery is not only despicable and shocking, but highlights the need for intensified united action against the scourge of rape,” Modise said.

In condemning the incident, Modise called on women to avoid high-risk places that could increase their vulnerability, such as shebeens and pubs, since many perpetrators targeted women who were either drunk or who asked for lifts from strangers.

“Young girls and women should carefully consider those that they choose to go out with at night and the places they go to for entertainment, given that not even infants are safe from sexual violence,” the premier said.

Captain Adele Myburgh said earlier that on Saturday the 20-year-old woman was at a tavern in Phokeng when a man approached her. He forced her into the graveyard and raped her.

The woman reported the matter to police and a 37-year-old man, known to the woman, was arrested yesterday.
