Gumtree bakkie advert sparks a racist rant

2013-06-02 06:00

A Centurion man is being investigated by police after he allegedly refused to sell his bakkie to a black buyer.

The man, who also faces an SA Human Rights probe, allegedly told Mabopane resident Evans Molepo that “all blacks must die” to make him happy.

Molepo was responding to an advertisement on classifieds website Gumtree for a Corsa utility van.

The seller, who left his home address on the site, indicated that interested buyers should only email or send him messages on instant messaging application Whatsapp rather than call him.

But when Molepo got in touch via Whatsapp, the seller immediately asked whether he was white and Afrikaans. City Press has seen the chat.

The Centurion resident said he would not sell his car to a black person because “white and black have never worked”.

Molepo pleaded with him to make the sale, offering to pay cash so it would not be a lengthy process. But over the next 30 minutes, the chat got extremely heated.

Molepo asked what the seller thought should be done for white and black people to “move on”, and said the race issue did not matter to him because he was not born during “that time”.

But the seller replied: “So what, it matters to me, ok. Let’s leave it like that, for me to move on all blacks must die.” Challenged by Molepo, the man replied: “Freedom of speech, you asked me so I answered you so go make your case black k****r and p**s off.”

The seller deleted his account from Gumtree the following day. Molepo told City Press that he could not let the man get away with the “hate speech”.

Both the Human Rights Commission and the police have confirmed they are investigating Molepo’s complaint.

Gumtree has apologised to Molepo and promised to help police with their nvestigation.

City Press contacted the seller, but he claimed he was not the person being investigated.
