Gunshots and stabbings disrupt Eastern Cape ANC meeting

2011-12-14 07:19

Seven people were injured when an ANC meeting in Mthatha, Eastern Cape, was disrupted at the weekend, the Dispatch Online reported.

A fight broke out on Sunday afternoon between groups of rival ANC members over who was representing the local ward at a branch general meeting.

Both groups claimed to represent the same ward.

ANC marshals tried to separate the two sides as the fight broke out.

Several gunshots were fired by members, while some members were beaten with rocks and sticks.

The injured were taken to Mthatha General and Nelson Mandela Academic hospitals.

Nkululeko Gili, chairman of one of the groups, said: “Within minutes it was chaos. There was blood everywhere, people were assaulted with sticks and stabbed. Several shots were fired. It was a scary situation.”

Gili said the meeting was postponed after the violence broke out.

Mayekiso said members of Gili’s group were not ANC members and they belonged to an organisation called the Civil Alliance of SA.

“These people went to the ANC meeting hellbent on disrupting it. They wanted to enter our meeting forcefully although they are not ANC members,” he said.
