HANGING WITH: Lebo Mashile

Celebrating a decade in arts and entertainment . . . It has been quite a journey. What’s incredibly refreshing is the number of women who have come through the ranks over the years in different industries such as the arts and theatre. They are injecting a lot of positivity into the world.

Her achievements . . . All my achievements are just an affirmation that says I’m still on the right path. They have meant different things at different times throughout my career, but they are deeply appreciated.

Her latest award, Glamour’s Wordsmith award . . . It’s nice to be acknowledged. It’s important for women to build a network with each other in varying sectors and support each other not just during award ceremonies.

Going international . . . My first book, In a Ribbon of Rhythm, is being translated into German and comes with an audio CD. I will be touring three cities there, including Berlin, before going into the southern part of the country.

Releasing her book in audio form . . . It’s another way for me to reach out to more audiences. People had been asking me to do my poems in audio version so I finally put it together and it will be ready for downloading at the end of this month.

The near future . . . I’m leaving at the end of this month for Italy on a tour of Rome and Milan for South Africa’s freedom celebrations hosted by the South African Embassy. Then I will perform in the theatre production Threads with the Moving into Dance Mophatong at the Harare International Festival of the Arts before coming home to perform for Winnie Madikizela-Mandela on May 7.

Being a Films and Publications Board ambassador . . . It has made me aware that the issue of child pornography is serious. I know the FPB is infamous for having the proposed porn channel scrapped, but they really are doing admirable work in communities to inform them of child trafficking, porn and other big issues.

Body of Words . . . It’s a new show I’m working on with eight other female poets. It includes writers such as Khosi Xaba and Thami Magubane. The cast is made up of women who I really admire as writers and the show will be on at the Market Theatre Lab from May 14 to 16.

An all female ensemble . . . Seeing women together on stage resonates and says we are articulate and powerful. It sends the message that we are not going anywhere.

On love . . . I don’t want to make my private life public because once you go there you never go back. I do have a man, though, and we are happy.

Aspirations . . . If I can end this year with two books being translated it would be great. My first book is also being translated into French, so let’s see what happens.
