Haiti earthquake a tragedy: Aristide

2010-01-13 14:15

Haiti’s former president Jean-Bertrand Aristide has described as a

“tragedy that defies expression” the earthquake that hit the Caribbean nation,

killing hundreds of people.

“It is a tragedy that defies expression, a tragedy that compels all

people to the highest levels of human compassion and solidarity,” he said in a

statement on Wednesday.

He was “mourning the death and destruction that has befallen Haiti”

along with his wife.

“From Africa, the ancestral home of Haiti, we send our profoundest

condolences and love to the thousands of children, mothers, fathers, brothers

and sisters worst affected.

“To the entire nation, our love and wishes for strength and courage

in this most difficult of times,” said the former state president, living in

exile in South Africa since he was ousted in a coup in 2004.

The Caribbean country’s first democratically-elected leader fled

Haiti in February 2004 following a rebellion by those who questioned the

election results that hoisted his party to the presidential office.

The 56-year-old lives in South Africa with his wife and two

children.

International relations department spokesperson Nomfanelo Kota said

no South Africans had been reported killed in Tuesday’s 7.0 magnitude

earthquake.
