Haiti elections a farce, says US monitoring group

2010-11-29 08:08

Washington – Haiti’s vote was fraught with widespread irregularities and should be rejected by the international community, a US election monitoring group said yesterday.

“From the banning of the country’s most popular party from the ballot to election day irregularities including numerous reports of ballot stuffing and the disenfranchisement of numerous eligible voters, these elections were an obvious farce from start to finish,” said Mark Weisbrot, co-director of the Center for Economic and Policy Research.

“The international community should reject these elections and affirm support for democratic institutions in Haiti,” he added.

Center for Economic and Policy Research policy analyst Alex Main, who was in Haiti to observe election day, had witnessed numerous irregularities, the group said.

That included what appeared to be a stuffed ballot box at one location.

In Cite Soleil, a Fanmi Lavalas party stronghold with a population of 300 000, fewer than 100 000 people were registered to vote, the group added.
