Harrismith cop in critical condition after jailbreak

2011-05-13 11:09

The policeman shot in the chest during an escape by five prisoners in Harrismith was still in hospital, police spokesman Captain Dennis Adriao said today.

“He is in a critical condition.”

The five escaped from the Harrismith Magistrate’s Court yesterday morning when they overpowered the policeman escorting them.

They were arrested for armed robbery.

The policeman was shot in the head and died, and a colleague who came to investigate was shot in the chest.

The five then allegedly hijacked a Mercedes-Benz outside the court, taking the woman driving the car with them as a hostage in the back seat.

Police spotted the car near QwaQwa and followed it. The driver of the hijacked vehicle lost control near Bluegumbosch and crashed.

He was killed and the woman being held hostage seriously injured. She later died in hospital.

Adriao said the four escapees were still in hospital under police guard and receiving treatment. They would face additional charges, including murder.

Police confiscated two R5 rifles and a pistol that had been taken from police.

“We are still investigating to see whether procedures were followed and if we need to review them,” he said.
