‘Have faith in ANC leadership’

Members of the ANC Youth League should have faith in the party’s leadership and respect the findings of the disciplinary committee which expelled Julius Malema, the Eastern Cape ANC said yesterday.

“We wish to advise all members of the ANC to uphold the values, culture, dignity and tradition of the movement,” spokesperson Mlibo Qoboshiyana said.

He was responding to a report in the Daily Dispatch that the league’s provincial secretary, Mziwonke Ndabeni, publicly rejected the national disciplinary committee’s verdict on Malema.

Qoboshiyana said a “matured leadership” was needed to keep the youth league together through political guidance, teaching them to respect the ANC.

He said Ndabeni’s comments were an attack on the ANC’s legitimate and democratic processes.

“As the ANC in the Eastern Cape we appeal to all members of our movement, especially those who are members of our youth league, to allow internal disciplinary processes to take their course without fear, favour or prejudice.”

Qoboshiyana said there were reports of threats to disrupt the ANC centenary celebrations planned in the province, but any attempt would be met with “no mercy”.

Eastern Cape ANC youth league spokesperson Nkosinathi Nomatiti on Thursday called for a “political solution” to Malema’s expulsion.

“We don’t believe that the ANC should expel members of its preparatory school, rather should respond with a corrective intention and not through extreme punitive measures,” he said.

The ANC announced on Wednesday it had expelled Malema from the party, after he was found guilty of sowing divisions in its ranks, among other charges.
