Heads of state keep Zuma busy

2012-01-05 14:38

The arrival of many heads of state for the ANC centenary celebrations is keeping President Jacob Zuma busy, his spokesperson, Mac Maharaj, said after the president did not attend a walk-about today.

The ANC cancelled Zuma’s walk-about and public meetings in Thaba Nchu, Bloemfontein, but could not explain why Zuma had failed to go ahead with his planned programme.

Health Minister and ANC national executive member Aaron Motsoaledi was scheduled to address a small group of ANC supporters who had come to see Zuma this afternoon.

Yesterday the ANC said 46 heads of state had confirmed that they would attend the ruling party’s 100th birthday bash in Bloemfontein at the weekend.

The high-profile guests included Zimbabwean president Robert Mugabe, Tanzanian President Jakaya Kikwete and Palestinian president Mahmoud Abbas.

Today, Maharaj said Zuma’s schedule was busy as he had “to see them all and can’t see them and walk away”.

However, he could not say where the president was and referred all queries about his whereabouts and programme to the ANC.

ANC spokesperson Jackson Mthembu could not immediately be reached for comment.
