» The cheapest way to lose weight

Researchers from Charité University Medical Centre in Berlin, Germany have confirmed what many of us believe – that water is the cheapest way to lose weight.

They conducted a study in which they found that adults who drank two cups before a meal lost about 1,8kg more than a group which didn’t drink the extra water before they ate.

» Think twice about skimmed milk

If you thought skimmed milk was benefiting you in your weight-loss programme, think again. Researchers from the Harvard School of Public Health have discovered that skimmed milk might be worse than full cream milk when it comes to weight gain.

» How to train your brain

A new study has found that computerised brain training can improve memory and language skills in the elderly.

A team of scientists from the University of California, Los Angeles, tested the brain activity of 69 men and women with an average age of 82 by making play a computerised brain-fitness programme called Dakim BrainFitness.

They found that of the 69 participants, the 52 individuals who over a six-month period completed at least 40 sessions (of 20–25 minutes each) on the programme showed improvement in both immediate and delayed memory skills, as well as language skills.
