Health MEC lashes out at poor service

2011-10-11 16:16

She would rather be without a job than let the public down with poor service, a fuming Free State health MEC Fezi Ngubentombi said during a surprise visit to a clinic in Freedom Square, Bloemfontein, today.

“We are killing our people. We can’t do this,” Ngubentombi said.

Senior management of the provincial health department and clinic supervisors had to explain to the MEC why long queues of patients were waiting for hours to be helped and some were being turned away.

Ngubentombi said she received a call from the provincial secretary of trade union federation Cosatu, Sam Mashinini, last night.
Mashinini told her that people were complaining about the service at the clinic.

Said Ngubentombi: “This small clinic is serving 13 different neighbourhoods. There is a staff shortage and when one nurse goes on leave there is a big problem.”

Ngubentombi gave senior officials until Monday to have two mobile units with staff and medicine at the clinic. She said she would go back and make sure they did their jobs. She also asked that a nurse specialising in HIV/Aids treatment be placed at the clinic.

“The Free State is the province with the third highest rate of HIV/Aids. We cannot afford not to have dedicated staff to treat patients with HIV/Aids,” said Ngubentombi.
