Health department ordered to pay more than R50m for bungled tender

2013-04-19 09:32

North West Health MEC Dr Magome Masike has been ordered by the North West High Court to pay more than R50 million including interest to MR Property Developers over a bungled R134 million tender.

Mahikeng-based MR Property Developers was appointed in March 2008 to supply equipment, furniture, accessories and health technology worth R134.5 million to the Vryburg Hospital.

The company launched proceedings at the North West High Court in Mahikeng after the department failed to pay four invoices worth over R50 million in October 2011.

According to the judgment delivered last Thursday, Judge Ronald Hendricks said he was satisfied that Masike did not have a genuine defence to MR Property Developers’ claim.

Judge Hendricks said the department had previously paid substantial amounts of money to MR Property Developers based on invoices similar to the ones they rejected.

North West Health spokesperson Tebogo Lekgethwane said he did not have details of the department’s next move but promised to make enquiries.

MR Property Developers supplied the Vryburg Hospital with incubators, theatre tables, accessories, ultrasound units, life support systems and operating tables.

MR Property Developers director Roulgh Mabe could not be reached for comment.
