Heist suspects hijack police

2010-09-07 14:59

Two police officials were hijacked at gunpoint by a group of men suspected of robbing a cash-in-transit van in Khuma Location near Stilfontein, North West.

The suspects pulled a gun out on the police and they were forced to take cover, said spokesperson Lesego Metsi.

“Either you draw [a gun] first or you are dead... the person will kill you,” he said.

The suspects drove the car about two kilometres down the road where they abandoned it and fled into the township.

A 34-year-old man was arrested last night in the location for his alleged involvement in the heist, Metsi said.

A police search of the suspect’s house turned up two cash containers that were taken during the heist, as well as a firearm that was allegedly used during the attack.

The cash containers were empty when police found them, he said.

Yesterday, about six men robbed a cash-in-transit van at the Engen garage in Khuma Location of two containers with an undisclosed amount of money and a security guard’s firearm.

The arrested suspect was expected to appear in court tomorrow, he said.

Police are still searching for another four or five suspects.
