‘Here’s why I have a side chick’

2015-03-15 06:00

A married business consultant told City Press that although he has a mistress, he doesn’t think of her as a side chick.

“I don’t think of her as a side chick. She is a very respectable married woman,” he said.

“We met in 2007 when she was about two to three years into her marriage, and a year before I got married to my wife. I am with my wife and I’m happy, and the relationship doesn’t make any difference to my marriage. My girlfriend and I complement each other without having the complications that there are in a marriage.

“I see her once a week and we chat every day on WhatsApp. My wife doesn’t know about her, although I was careless before. I had pictures on my phone and I didn’t know it synchronised automatically with my laptop, so my wife found them.

“You never really admit to the relationship because one, it would be hurting your wife, but also, you would deny this thing, because if anything happened to them [the girlfriend], you would be liable.”

The consultant said in his opinion, the safest way to conduct an extramarital affair was to take a lover who had a lot to lose.

“She has her own family and she is more experienced [at marriage] than me. She told me it is not all rosy. We are able to discuss issues in life, our careers, and we also deeply love each other. We are able to be friends at the same time and we know each other as if we are married.

“At some point, yes, I wanted her to get divorced [and marry me], but it would have complicated both our lives.

“My very close friends and my brother know about her, but their wives don’t. It would be unfair if they were to know.

“I know my brother doesn’t take anybody else but his wife to a function like the Durban July, so I learnt from him. But if there is a getaway, a road trip, where people don’t know us, I will take her along. But if it’s gala dinners or if it is someone who knows me and I want him to respect me, I will bring my wife.

“Sometimes the status symbol thing happens a lot, especially if you are far from home. For example, at the [ANC’s birthday celebrations on] January 8, I saw my comrades with a side chick, something to decorate them.

“But remember, those are not necessarily side chicks, but people you pick up on the streets, like when there is an event coming and you want to look great. You find next week they dump them.

“With me, it’s a stable thing.”
