Historic schools ‘must be restored as cultural icons’

2012-09-24 14:31

Historic schools should be fully restored as cultural icons, because they have a special place in the country’s heritage, Anglican Archbishop Njongonkulu Ndungane has said.

These schools had educated many of South Africa’s leaders, including former president Nelson Mandela, African Union Commission chair Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma and Inkatha Freedom Party leader Mangosuthu Buthelezi, he said in a statement.

Communities and past pupils would need to support the schools by donating time and money.

The government also needed to play a role in developing the schools.

“I therefore call on government to assign these schools a special category and designate them as academies,” said Ndungane, who is the executive director of the Historic Schools Restoration Project.

“The project also seeks to reclaim the memory and heritage of the historic sites that include the original school buildings,” he said.

Ndungane said Adams College, Inanda Seminary, Inkamana, Lemana, Ohlange and St Matthews were just some of the historic schools in South Africa which should be assigned to a special category.
