‘Hit squad’ cops appear in court

2012-08-24 09:29

The 30 members of the Durban organised crime unit charged with alleged hit squad activity have appeared in the Durban Magistrates’ Court.

According to the indictment the officers, under the command of Hawks KZN head Major-General Johan Booysen carried out a total of 28 unlawful killings of suspects between 2008 and last year.

The unit members face an excess of 100 charges ranging from assault, defeating ends of justice, theft and attempted murder with the indictment claiming that Booysen and his senior officers ran the unit as an organised criminal enterprise, benefiting through career advancement and financial reward by criminal acts.

The indictment states that while the killings were committed by lower ranking officers, Booysen and other seniors knew about the illegal actions and either helped cover them up or turn a blind eye.

The courtroom was packed to capacity with members of the Tactical Response Team restricting access to the court.

The accused will all appear again in the KwaZulu-Natal High Court on 29 October.
