Hoax call to tracker lands man in jail

2010-06-01 14:43

A 24-year-old man has been arrested for defeating the ends of

justice. He made a hoax phone call to a tracking company, claiming his car had

been stolen.

The man phoned the tracking company in Maitland, Cape Town at about

8.30pm yesterday to report he had been held up by two gunmen who had then stolen

his car, police spokesperson Warrant Officer Siyabulela Vukubi said.

“The tracking company then activated the tracker in order to trace

the client’s vehicle,” he said.

“The complaint was also dispatched to the SAPS K9 Unit to search

for the vehicle and the tracker signal was then picked up and followed to where

the vehicle was parked in Product Street, Maitland.”

When the tracking company phoned the man to inform him that his

vehicle had been recovered, he told them to cancel the complaint, Vukubi

said.

“It transpired that the complainant was in fact not hijacked but

was merely testing the response of the SAPS and the tracking company.”

The man was arrested when he went to collect his vehicle and will

appear in the Cape Town Magistrate’s Court tomorrow.
