Home affairs department busy over registration weekend

The department of home affairs processed thousands of identity documents during the final voter registration weekend.

Spokesperson Ronnie Mamoepa today said the department was satisfied with the services they gave citizens at the weekend.

“As a consequence, 19 862 IDs were issued; 2 081 temporary identity certificates were issued; [and] 100 001 ID applications [were] received,” Mamoepa said.

The department also processed a total of 4 540 smart ID cards.

The smart identity cards, which will replace the green, bar-coded identity books were given to first-time applicants and pensioners on Saturday.

The department visited 22 prisons, where a total of 32 IDs and nine temporary ID certificates were issued.

“In line with directives from Minister Naledi Pandor, 315 home affairs offices were opened on both days from 8am to 5pm,” said Mamoepa.

“The work of the offices was complimented by the deployment of 73 mobile trucks to reach out to those areas where the department does not have a footprint.”

A total of 2 691 officials were on duty nationally to assist with the documentation, and senior officials were deployed across the country.

President Jacob Zuma announced last week that elections would be held on May 7.
