Housing MEC vows action following rampage

2009-09-22 13:18

The Western Cape local government and housing department has warned

those involved in causing damage estimated at R1-million to RDP houses in

Khayelitsha’s Mandela Park.

“We will not tolerate those who stand in the way of development for

their own selfish ends,” Housing MEC Bonginkosi Madikizela said in a statement,

following Saturday’s chaos when about 100 Mandela Park residents went on a

rampage and vandalised 42 of the 57 state-subsidised houses in the area.

In total, 26 people were arrested on Saturday and Sunday and

charged with public violence and malicious damage to property. Twenty-three

suspects were released yesterday after charges were withdrawn as the case had

not been on the court roll and the docket had been handed back to the police for

further investigation.

On Saturday, chaos ensued after residents learned that they were

only being allocated 15 houses instead of 23. The angry residents set fire to

one house, broke windows, took away moveable building materials and burned tyres

on the streets.

In his statement yesterday, Madikizela said if it was found that

any of those responsible for vandalising the houses were in line for a house on

this particular project, or any other, their names would be removed from the

department’s beneficiary list.
