Housing no-shows deregistered

2011-06-30 08:59

People who failed to occupy their homes in the multimillion-rand GaMoeka project near Makapanstad will be taken off the housing waiting list, the North West human settlements department said today.

More than 100 houses would be given to other people, spokesperson Lesiba Kgwele said in a statement.

The decision was taken yesterday during a meeting with related departments and contractors.

“The inability of the municipality to trace beneficiaries resulted in many unoccupied, completed houses being illegally occupied or vandalised, and contractors not being paid as registered beneficiaries had not signed ‘happy letters’,” said Kgwele.

These letters have to be signed by the new occupant, and indicate they are satisfied with the quality of the house.

If this is not done, the contractor does not get paid.

A team from the department also found low-cost houses were being built for “undeserving” beneficiaries, some of whom already had “massive” houses in another village.

As a result the beneficiary list was being reviewed. Officials were scheduled to visit the village next Tuesday to deregister beneficiaries. The project cost R94.8 million.
